Sun Damage and Lacking Zzzs: Ways You’re Ruining Your Skin

The signs of aging show on our skin. Unfortunately, premature aging can sometimes occur because of things we have no control over.

Plastic surgery isn’t the only answer to sagging skin and wrinkles, but you can prevent these from happening at a young age.

Beauty Sleep is Not a Myth

You need to catch up on sleep not just to regain energy, but to promote collagen production for your skin, too. Collagen is necessary to repair the damaged DNA, caused by harsh UV rays and pollution. This can lead to premature aging.

When you don’t get enough sleep, you also reduce blood flow to the skin, making it look drab and dull. When you sleep, you increase blood flow to the skin, giving it a healthy glow, i.e. rosy cheeks.

But don’t just go to bed without washing your face. You may get the recommended seven to eight hours of shut eye, but if you go to bed with the day’s dust and dirt, you could get breakouts later on. Why? Throughout the day, environmental toxins accumulate on your skin and get inside pores.

Slap on Some Sunscreen

Vitamin D is good for your skin, but too much could do serious damage. Before you go out and start your day, make sure to put on some sunscreen.

Eat Healthy

It’s OK to give into junk food once, in a while. But make sure to eat the right amount of fresh fruits and vegetables to prevent skin aging. Junk food, with its overly processed ingredients and sugar content, not only prevents a slimmer waistline. It also affects your skin because it damages the proteins (collagen and elastin) necessary to keep skin elastic and firm.

Stop Smoking

Smoking is not just bad for your teeth and overall health. It’s also bad for your skin, as it quickens skin aging. It causes wrinkles and it gives you a dull, sallow complexion.
